Summer holiday in Lapland
Viime kesänä matkustimme perheen kanssa Lappiin. Olin haaveillut Lapin matkasta jo monta vuotta. Lensimme Helsingistä Rovaniemelle. Lento kesti vain puolitoista tuntia. Rovaniemellä vuokrasimme auton ja jatkoimme pohjoiseen.
Asuimme pienessä mökissä järven rannalla. Mökki oli kaukana kaupungista. Ympärillä oli vain metsää ja vettä. Lähin naapuri asui kymmenen kilometrin päässä. Aluksi hiljaisuus tuntui oudolta, mutta sitten totuimme siihen.
Aamulla heräsin aikaisin. Aurinko paistoi jo kello viisi. Lapissa keskikesällä ei tule pimeää lainkaan. Tätä kutsutaan yöttömäksi yöksi. Lapset eivät halunneet nukkua, koska oli niin valoisaa.
Kävelimme paljon luonnossa. Näimme poroja, kettuja ja yhden karhun kaukana. Karhu oli iso ja musta. Pysyimme rauhassa autossa ja katsoimme sitä. Otimme valokuvia, mutta emme menneet lähelle.
Eräänä päivänä menimme tunturille. Kiipesimme ylös kolme tuntia. Tunturin huipulta näkyi koko maisema. Näkymä oli upea. Söimme eväitä kalliolla ja joimme termoksesta kahvia. Tuuli oli viileä, mutta aurinko lämmin.
Lapin ruoka on erilaista kuin etelässä. Söin ensimmäistä kertaa elämässäni poronkäristystä. Maistui yllättävän hyvältä. Joimme myös puolukkamehua. Marjapuuro oli lempiruokani.
Iltaisin teimme nuotiota rannassa. Lapset paistoivat makkaraa keppien päässä. Vaimoni luki kirjaa. Minä vain istuin ja katselin järveä. Joskus tunsin, että aika pysähtyi.
Yhden päivän satoi koko päivän. Pysyimme mökillä. Pelasimme korttia ja söimme paljon. Sade ei haitannut, koska tarvitsimme lepoa.
Matka kesti kaksi viikkoa. Kun palasimme kotiin, olin levännyt mutta surullinen. Kaipasin jo Lappia takaisin. Olen päättänyt, että ensi kesänä menemme uudestaan. Lappi on erityinen paikka. Sieltä saa hiljaisuutta, jota kaupungissa ei voi löytää.
Lapsille matka jäi mieleen ikuisesti. Ne kertovat siitä vielä nyt kavereille. Sanovat, että Lappi on Suomen kaunein paikka. Olen samaa mieltä.
English translation
Last summer we travelled with the family to Lapland. I had dreamed of the Lapland trip for many years. We flew from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. The flight took only an hour and a half. In Rovaniemi we rented a car and continued north.
We stayed in a small cottage by a lake. The cottage was far from the city. Around us was only forest and water. The nearest neighbour lived ten kilometres away. At first the silence felt strange, but then we got used to it.
In the morning I woke up early. The sun was already shining at five. In Lapland in midsummer it doesn't get dark at all. This is called "nightless night" (the polar day). The children didn't want to sleep because it was so bright.
We walked a lot in nature. We saw reindeer, foxes and one bear in the distance. The bear was big and black. We stayed calmly in the car and watched it. We took photos but didn't get close.
One day we went up the fell. We climbed for three hours. From the top of the fell the whole landscape was visible. The view was magnificent. We ate snacks on the rocks and drank coffee from a thermos. The wind was cool but the sun was warm.
Lapland food is different from the south. For the first time in my life I ate sautéed reindeer. It tasted surprisingly good. We also drank lingonberry juice. Berry porridge became my favorite dish.
In the evenings we made a campfire by the shore. The children grilled sausages on sticks. My wife read a book. I just sat and looked at the lake. Sometimes I felt that time stopped.
One day it rained all day. We stayed at the cottage. We played cards and ate a lot. The rain didn't bother us, because we needed the rest.
The trip lasted two weeks. When we returned home, I was rested but sad. I was already missing Lapland. I have decided that next summer we will go again. Lapland is a special place. There you can find a silence you cannot find in the city.
For the children the trip stayed in memory forever. They still tell their friends about it. They say that Lapland is the most beautiful place in Finland. I agree.
